As the number of children born out of wedlock increases, so does the number of abandoned children. More than 800,000 children under the age of 18 are abandoned and live in state run institutions. Perhaps as many as two to three million more are living on the streets of Russian cities.
Children of HIV positive mothers are considered to be HIV positive as well. Additionally, there is a problem of “temporary” commercial sex workers, i.e. students and others, who periodically work in the sex trade.
