The worsening of the political situation in the Occupied Territories has resulted in great economic loss. This has stemmed from the restriction on the movement of Palestinian people and goods, as well as mass house imprisonment policies and severe limitations on the entry of Palestinian male workers into Israel. The unemployment rate among Palestinian men has reached unprecedented levels of 63.3% and the poverty rate will soon reach 70%. Access to the workplace and markets have become nearly impossible, while prices in the sealed off villages and cities continue to rise. This is seriously compromising household welfare, as families have to endure long periods without work or income.
In response to the labour limitations on Palestinian men, World Vision aims to implement two income-generation projects to develop the skills of Palestinian women and help mothers to support their families. These projects include:
The 'Home Economy Project' will train women to plant medical herbs and raise animals on the household property. Animals such as rabbits and chickens are highly productive and suit household production. Moreover, their investment and labour costs are low.
The 'Animal Breading Project' will provide each mother with a female goat for milking, to breed at home. After 6 months, the mother goat should bear two kids. If a female kid is produced, she will be given to another family in need.
Herb planting, household rabbit/ chicken raising and animal breeding will provide an income to families and improve the diet of poor rural and urban households.
Over 67% of the school infrastructure in the North West Frontier Province was fully or partially damaged by the earthquake. It will take about seven years to rebuild all local schools.
