Romanian farmers reap rewards at Harvest Day
The recent 'Harvest Day' brought the market to the farmers in Ialomita County, who seldom have the means to sell their produce in bulk
ROMANIA - Farmers in Ialomita County in south-east Romania seldom have the means to sell their produce in bulk, but a recent ‘Harvest Day’ brought the market – customers from 12 communities- to them.

This autumn event, organised by World Vision Romania in partnership with local authorities, was an opportunity for rural farmers, small business owners and entrepreneurs to receive some much-needed exposure and increase their income by selling their produce.

“Events like ‘The Harvest Day’ help us, the farmers, a lot. We do not have the necessary resources to go to the big cities and sell our products and sometimes we don’t have access to their markets. We are glad that this event brings all these people here and we can sell our products, in our communities”, said Gheorghe Maftei, a local farmer from Fierbinti.

Through events like this, World Vision Romania aims to generate development opportunities in agriculture for rural areas, to create market access for product commercialization and to help community members to secure employment. Staff inform, advise and assist people to set up small businesses and have successfully helped nine such farmers in the area to access European funds to start up small businesses.

Economic Development and Education and Civil Society are the main directions in which World Vision invests in order for the 12 rural communities from Ialomita County to improve their quality of life.

“Children’s welfare is difficult to reach separate from that of families and communities. This fair was organised in order to promote small producers from rural areas and facilitate their access to markets. Economic development opportunities help to raise living standards,” underlined Crenguta Barbosu, National Manager for Economic Development and Agriculture for World Vision Romania.

Although the event had an agricultural focus the children of the area weren’t to miss out on displaying their handicrafts. A children’s fair gave them the chance to learn how to earn money, how to negotiate the prices and manage their earnings.

Even though many are growing up in a poor environment they showed how talented and creative they are and revealed their pride when people wanted to buy their handicrafts.
